About Harvey Norman

Harvey Norman is considered one of the massive multinational retailers, as well as being Australian-based, selling items such as linen and bedding, furniture items, communication equipment, basic computers, and household electrical products. Its business model principally operated as a franchise, with the chief brand name, and all of the operating stores, wholly owned by Harvey Norman Holdings Ltd.

Previously working together as door-to-door salesman, business partners Ian Norman and Gerry Harvey opened their very first store in 1960, and they specialised in home appliances and household electrical goods. The store's profitable success was far beyond any initial business forecast, and this prompted both of them to want to grow the business. They decided to hold business discussions with prominent retailer at the time - Keith Lord - who was also seeking to expand and develop his own retail enterprise.

During their business discussions, they could not decide on a business name for the new venture, as both Gerry Harvey and Keith Lord were unwilling to take on the other retailers name as the brand of the new joint venture. They all ultimately decided to use Ian Norman's name, alongside that of Peter Ross - who was the very first head store manager. This agreement was the genesis for the creation of the new retail chain named Norman Ross.

Over time, Keith Lord decided to part ways with Harvey Norman, and upon reaching a settlement, they change the business name back to Harvey Norman.

As of 2020, there are approximately 290 company owned franchise stores operating in both Australia, New Zealand, South-East Asia, and Europe.
